Website migrationHow to move your website to a new host.

Step by step, so it doesn’t go offline or lose an email on the way. Or leave it to us: if it runs on WordPress, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Drupal or similar, we move it for free, when it suits you.

Moving it, step by step

  1. 1

    Get ready

Find the logins for your current hosting and for where your domain is registered. If your mailboxes are at your current host, choose where they’ll go.

  2. 2

    Shorten the wait

A day ahead, lower your domain’s TTL, how long the internet remembers where your site lives, so the switch takes minutes, not hours.

  3. 3

    Copy and test

Copy the files and the database to the new server, and try the site there before anyone else sees it.

  4. 4

    Switch

Point your domain to the new server. Don’t cancel the old hosting until your email and your domain’s settings have moved too.

  5. 5

    Keep an eye on it

Check that forms, checkout and emails work. Google visits a little less often for a few days, then picks up again.

Rather not do it yourself? We move standard sites for free, on every plan.Ask us to move it

Can your site be moved?

Most can. It depends on what your site is built with, and on us being able to get to its files and database.

Moved for free

€0on every plan

Sites built with any of these or similar, as long as we can get to their files and database. We set up the software they run on, too.

For example:

  • WordPress
  • WooCommerce
  • PrestaShop
  • Drupal
  • Node.js
  • Symfony
  • Magento
  • Static sites
  • and more

Rebuilt for you

€100per hour of work, quoted first

A site made with a site builder can’t be moved, so we rebuild it on your new server. We quote it before we start.

Site builders like:

  • Wix
  • Squarespace
  • Shopify
  • Webflow

What you keep, and what we need

What you keep

  • Your domain, registered in your name.
  • Your mailboxes, where they are. If they’re at your current host, you’ll move them to a mail provider, and we’ll tell you how.
  • Your site as it is: we move it, we don’t redo it.

What we’ll need from you

  • Your domain name, and who hosts your site now.
  • Access to where you registered your domain, if you have it.
  • Access to your current hosting, so we can get to your site’s files and database.

Not sure what your site needs?

Send us your site and we’ll tell you what we’d fix, at no cost.

Questions about moving your site

Is moving my site really free?

Yes. We move your site from your current host for free, on every plan, if it’s built with WordPress, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Drupal or similar, or is a static site, and we can get to its files and database. A site made with Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or Webflow can’t be moved, so we rebuild it, paid by the hour, with a quote before we start.

Do I keep my domain?

Yes. Your domain stays yours, registered where it is now. You only change one setting there (its nameservers), and from then on we look after its DNS, the records that tell the internet where your site and your email are, so there’s nothing for you to remember.

What happens to my email?

We don’t host mailboxes: yours stay where they are. If they’re at your current host, you’ll need to move them to a mail provider, like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Proton, and we’ll tell you how. Keep your old hosting until they have moved. The emails your site sends, like contact forms, order confirmations and password resets, go out through our mail relay on every plan, at no extra cost.

Will my site go offline during the move?

Normally your visitors notice nothing. We copy and test your site on the new server while the old one keeps running, and only switch when it’s right. During the switch both servers answer, so your site stays up. A shop or booking site gets a short pause in new orders or bookings during the final copy, at a quiet time we plan with you.

How long does the move take?

We agree the date with you: it depends on your site, and on how soon we have the access we need.

Will moving hurt my Google rankings?

No, if it’s done right. Your addresses don’t change, and Google’s own guidance says moving to a new host doesn’t hurt rankings as long as the site stays reachable and downtime is minimal. Expect Google to crawl your site a little more slowly for a few days.

Can you move a Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or Webflow site?

Not as it is: a site builder keeps the site, so we rebuild it on your new server, by the hour, with a quote first. If you’d like a fresh design while we’re at it, we can do that too.

My site runs on something unusual. Can you still move it?

Tell us what it runs: older or unusual software is set up once, by the hour, with a quote first.

Which plan do I need?

It depends on how busy your sites are and how much help you want each month. If you’re not sure, ask us for a free website health check and we’ll recommend one.

Pricing

Can I leave later?

Yes. There’s no minimum term: if you leave, your service ends at the end of the month you’ve already paid for, we refund the months left of a year paid at once, less the free month, and we help you take everything with you, with a full copy of your site.
